Fashion 2.0: Social Media, Technology, And Innovation Awards

Last night, we joined a wide-ranging group of folks from across the fashion world, who made their way to the lovely SVA Theater in Chelsea, not far from our Manhattan offices. Marking their third year, the Style Coalition offered the Fashion 2.0 2012 Awards, the awards are voted on by online fans, nominated by industry peers, and are meant to "recognize and honor the most innovative fashion brands in the online community".

We enjoyed host Robert Verdi, and his colorful tales of olive oil- especially in regards to the keynote speaker,Norma Kamali. Her work with 3D was pretty inspiring, though we definitely wish we had been able to see the video with the appropriate 3D eyewear! Another highlight came from seeing some of the other best online fashion videos, including the winner from Prada, which features music from one of our favorite artists, Ratatat. We were pulling instead for another nominee, from Lanvin, which only some of the audience seemed to get- take a look and see if you recognize the dance moves (hint: think Kinect)!

Congratulations also to the first Visionary award winners from Gilt Groupe, as well as Instagram, who snagged "The Next Big Thing in Tech" award. DKNY won a couple of categories, including Best Twitter and Best Blog, while Marc Jacobs received an award for best website (and had perhaps the most enthusiastic acceptees). The mobile app winner was one we haven't tried- from Tiffany & Company- but it allows you to virtually try on their engagement rings. Bergdorf Goodman's Facebook presence was recognized, and last but not least, Kate Spade took home the "Top Innovator" trophy.

All in all, an interesting evening, and a good start to NY Fashion Week, which begins in earnest today.

About the Author

Greg dreamed up the idea for the Truly Network while living in Hawaii, which began with a single site called TrulyObscure. In 2010, when advertisers and readers were requesting coverage beyond the scope of that site, TrulyNet was launched, reaching a broader audience over a variety of niche sites. Formerly the head technology correspondent for the Des Moines Register at age 16, he has since lived and worked in five states and two countries, helping a list of organizations and companies that includes the United States Census Bureau, TripAdvisor, Events Photo Group, Berlitz, and Computer Geeks. He also served as the Content Strategy Manager for HearPlanet, a multi-platform app that has reached over a million users and has been featured in the New York Times, Hemispheres Magazine, National Geographic Adventure, Fox Business News, PC Magazine, and even Apple’s own iPhone ads. Greg has written as a restaurant critic and feature journalist for a number of national and international publications, including City Weekend Magazine, Red Egg Magazine, the Newton Daily News, Capital Change Magazine, and an arm of China Daily, Beijing Weekend. In addition, he has served as a consulting editor for the Foreign Language Press of Beijing, as well as a writer and editor for the George Washington University Hatchet, the school newspaper of his alma mater.
