Gerbe: Lovely French Stockings
There is nothing sexier than a woman in tights. History and fashion have shown us this again and again. Queen Elizabeth’s love for silk stocking began in the 1560s with her first pair of “silk ladies.” In the 1920s, women could not be seen in public without a pair of seamed hose. For the women who could not afford them, it was sometimes better to draw a seam on their legs with an eyebrow pencil than be seen with nothing! Tights continue to be in fashion- whether used to class-up a dress, or even to combine stockings with a pair of cut off shorts. Tights have come a long way from something that only men wore to women being able to find them in pretty much every color, pattern, or texture imaginable. With leggings being more in fashion and the array of tights available, you may have even noticed the questionable trend of women wearing tights as a pants substitute…
Like most things in fashion, the French know how to make it that much more alluring, fashionable, and seductive. Gerbe, established by Stephen Gerbe in 1904, is defined by their designer quality stocking and de luxe items, and does not disappoint. This Paris based company’s collection is pure high fashion, with each piece having its own unique elegant and sensuous feel. And if you don’t believe us, check them out in Vogue UK.
We've had the pleasure to try out three of their tights: the Delice Tights (in chocolat noir), Plumetis 10 Stay-ups(in noir), and the Plumetis 10 tights (in black/noir – this is the pair that was featured in Vogue UK). All were true to size and made from about 90% polyamide (nylon). Like most designer things, they did seem a bit more fragile, and I was very disheartened to find that the one set developed a rather large run only hours into wearing them. Other than that, they were super sexy, looked classy, and felt great.
Anything that is designer is not inexpensive and these three pairs run at 50,00 € ($63.67 US) for the Delice Tights and 32,50 € ($41.39 US) for each pair of Plumetis 10s. They can also be a bit hard to find on our shores, but definitely ask your high-end retailer, or check online. As always, be a little gentle with them- they're definitely alluring, but a bit sensitive. Gerbe garments are the type of accessory that will make you prance while in them.
