Icebreaker Commute: Fashionable, Flexible Merino
Yes, it's bike season. If the last few days of reviews and discussions haven't convinced you to hop on your wheels and head for a ride, maybe today's product will do the trick. We've been out and about, riding through the transition between spring and summer, and alternately enjoying and cursing the rain. It's been the perfect time to have an extra layer handy- now it's getting a bit warm for wool here during the daytimes in NYC, but cooler evenings and early mornings still can be a bit chilly.
The Icebreaker Commute Zip Thru is a men's long sleeve jacket made from Merino wool, with just a bit of Lycra for stretchiness and comfort. Classy enough to wear in to work, it's durable and feels great. We liked the unique code that's on each piece of apparel (they call it a baacode, no joke), allowing you to track the item back to the farm. Reflective touches (orange zippers, a small patch on the back) add some safety for cyclists, though we felt the back could've used from a bit of extra material on a darker jacket like this. The two pockets zip, with impressively good and sealed zippers.
It's reasonably heavy, as mentioned- wool isn't the lightest of materials. But it wicks impressively well, meaning that we stayed dry even during uphill exertions or during the mists and storms recently. The material has also held up well to some harsh urban conditions, and looks about the same as when it arrived. How many serious pieces of biking apparel can you wear to dinner and not feel out of place? At $175, it's definitely priced on the higher side, but for comfort and style, Icebreaker has won some fans.
